Releasing an app is actually rather relaxing, because no one cares.

Your app is one of 700,000 on the market. Even reaching the top 100 means your app has to approach the 99.99th percentile, which is fairly unlikely.

Once you’ve tempered your expectations (trust me, you won’t have a hit) and realised that your app won’t make you rich, you can relax. No one cares.

That said, no one releases an app without hoping that it will get some attention and downloads. So, here are three tips for releasing an app, based on the lessons we learned from our experience with Bad Hotel.

Many months ago indie developer Rory Buckley started researching the history of the fireplace and how it has evolved over the years. This unique history included looking back at the ever popular Yule Log, including the all-time great Yule Log TV program, a family favorite every Christmas. His research also revealed how a fireplace (whether traditional or modern) can help aid relaxation.

Taking the magic from the Yule Log, then combining the general relaxation feel of a typical crackling fireplace inspired him to start developing an application that boasted these features, along with todays impressive HD video abilities. To help learn the alphabet a picture is displayed on a canvas screen with the appropriate letter, isolated beginning sound, and word presented above. Tapping the picture will animate the object. I especially like the little worm who appears from the apple. Two games are included for ABC’s. At the crossroads you can choose from basket sorting or sorting with a prickly purple “hedgehog”. I thought the simpler game was with the buddy. This might be easier for smaller children as they pop the balloon holding the object with the corresponding beginning letter and Hedgie will catch it for them. After completing three questions your child will get to place characters on the Ferris Wheel and after completing the entire alphabet they all get a ride. When sorting the items into baskets children will have to remember what it stared with then drag and drop it to the correct lettered basket, a trickier finger maneuver is required. Each correct answer will reward them with a cheering crowd.

Its as easy as cleaning their room to count how many items to put on the Number Train. The train pulls up with a numbered car to fill with the waiting cargo. In the beginning young conductors load everything with a simple drag and drop motion. As the level progresses so do the number of cars and a sorting dimension is added. Although there is more to sort, children will find it easy to match the color of the cargo to the color of the car and successfully complete the job. A puzzle game follows each correct response. Numbers are introduced to children on a a clothes line, in the tutorial. Beneath the number block and word, illustrations are hung on the line to represent that number. Touching the picture will count them off individually.

A quirky cat acts as the barker in identification. Tapping on the requested item places it on the canvas and spells the word beneath. In the demonstration each item is displayed individually and tapping the drawing will activate an animation.

Small children will love to feed the adorable characters in the Shape section. The animals are picky though so they’ll have to choose the right shaped food. They’ll draw on what they learn in the skywriter tutorial where they pilot the airplay to trace shapes in the puffy clouds. As the menu is presented a verbal cue for the shape is given and a visual cue is displayed. When playing shape sorter a wrong answer receives a “nm” response from the diner, prompting players to try another shape to get a happy tummy response. And the shapes aren’t limited to just the basics either, adding ellipse, rhombus, and trapezium.

The iPhone Mom: “In addition to the 4 learning sections there are freeplay areas as well. I was particularly impressed with the realistic sounds of the piano and xylophone. Many children’s apps seem tinny to me but the effects in 123 Kids are clear. Also included for play are balloon pop, an animal body shuffle, a sticker picture gallery and a photo booth. Kids can add pictures of their own family in the photo area.”

Nearly one year ago indie developer Ernest Szoka started experimenting with a physics game engine to create his first mobile game. On a whim he decided to make a simple rag-doll physics arm that would smack a hovering object (in this case a fly) every time it got close. Amused by his simple creation he decided to turn it into a game, where a player controlling the main protagonist ‘Gus’ would walk around and hit mutant flies emanating from a trash can in the park. Buzz Attack was born!

Highlights in Buzz Attack include buying flyswatters, bug spray and other items from a suspicious man wearing a trenchcoat in the park as well as the ability to dynamically switch the game view into portrait or landscape. Unlike traditional side-scrolling games for touch screen devices, Buzz Attack has no controller buttons to clog up screen space and instead relies on intuitive tap and finger placement to control the character. Leaderboards, achievements and 4 difficulty modes round out the game.

Fast – ColoRotate is fast. The app’s interactive 3D color scope delivers an instant overview of color relationships, and users can adjust intensity, saturation and contrast with a few taps and drags of the fingertips. Users can share colors via email, Twitter, Facebook, Evernote, DropBox, or the iPad photo library. Connected to Photoshop, ColoRotate becomes a mobile color console.

Unique – ColoRotate features unique tools. The intuitive color scope represents colors in the same way our brains understand color – in 3D. The scope is a welcome feature for those who want to see the relationships between colors or map the distribution of colors in an image. The tool is based on neurological studies of how colors are seen and processed by our eyes and brain, demonstrating that ColoRotate’s three-dimensional view is the most scientifically rigorous display of colors available to designers and artists. Colors are plotted in a radish-shaped “color solid.” In 3D, the vertical dimension represents lightness and darkness, the horizontal dimension is color saturation, and the circumference of the radish contains all the colors of the color wheel. Thus, all colors and their relationships are visualized.

Precise – The app allows precision adjustments to individual colors or the whole palette. Sliders control hue and tint in multiple color spaces, such as RGB, CMYK, or HLS. A joystick control has eight parameters, such as hue, tint, color balance, contrast, and hue rotation.

Inspiration – Sometimes we want a little color inspiration. Users can generate random color palettes by adjusting variables like “natural vs. synthetic” or “muted vs. vivid.”

Blends – Like a painter’s palette, where colors can be mixed together, ColoRotate has a “blend” mode to tweak any color.

Previews – To see how the colors will look in a project, users can visualize colors as swatches, circles, stripes, text, or in the style of Josef Albers (concentric squares) or Gunta Stolzl (patchwork grid). In just 15 seconds, users can create a preview with a source image side-by-side with the palette, and share it by email.

Photoshop Connect – Users can run ColoRotate side-by-side with Adobe Photoshop CS5 or CS6 – serving as a mobile color console that is faster and more powerful than Adobe’s built-in color chooser. The app synchronizes in real-time with Photoshop. Changes to the Photoshop foreground and background colors are simultaneous on the app and the desktop. The app can load the image from the current Photoshop window and add the current palette to Photoshop’s “swatches” panel. More powerful than Adobe’s Kuler Android app, ColoRotate fills a major void for designers and artists who want to use their Apple iPad to improve their color-editing workflow with Photoshop.

The app builds on years of research and development by the team at IDEA.org, who first released a web version of the color editor in early 2009 using Adobe Flash. The new app is the next generation of ColoRotate, and is based on feedback from designers and artists about the kinds of features they need to work effectively and efficiently with colors.
