We have been grabbing data from the app store since it was first launched. These metrics are just the start of some of a analysis of that data.

Each app has a developer associated with it — we just count those to come up with that total.

And there's no API currently, but it's something we're looking into.

Another interesting statistic might be how many apps different developers produce.
e.g. of the 13900 developers, how many only produced 1 app, or 2 or 10 or 50+

Also, the above stats may be more meaningful/interesting if you could filter out or at least distinguish some of the apps that are repeats of the same basic one but submitted hundreds of times. e.g. Mapping apps, Translation apps, Fan Clubs, Essay Writing Wizard etc. Not sure how often this occurs but there have been suite a few recently.

Just where do you get your delay data from???!!!

These days its about 2-3 weeks for approval on new apps and 2-4 weeks for approval on updates.

Lots of complaints from developers on that.

How can we get stats on how many active apps are available in certain countries? For instance, upon returning to China I noticed a number of apps – Flight Control, Paper Toss, etc – are not on the China App Store. Do you have info on # of apps in App store for each country?

We evaluate all of the approval dates for new apps only. And while I am sure that there are a lot of long approval delays, I'm not sure that can be said for every app. My guess is that the people with the longest delays are the most vocal about it, so that's what you read the most. There are 300+ apps approved each day and we don't hear from the vast majority of the developers of those apps that the delay for approval was extraordinary.

Just a thought. Yes there is a problem with app approval delays, but I don't think it's as system wide as people make it out to be.

Only Apple and the developers know the download numbers. This isn't generally made public except on occasional cases by developers.

Yikes. I'm on day 19 for a new app, with no sign of anything from Apple. And it's a simple simple app.

Where do you get the submission date? I know I keep advancing the availability date because I'm told that will increase its “new” period when (if?) it does get approved.

For your numbers to be right, each 2 week approval would have to be balanced by an almost instant approval (or two 3-day approvals or 3 4-day approvals etc.) I know you guys are experienced and I'm a newb but this doesn't feel remotely accurate.

And I haven't seen one developer claim a less than 7 day approval for a new app–you're claiming the mean is less than that.

I guess I really need to look around and figure out what I did wrong… well at least I'll quote your stats when I contact Apple!

I think new apps take longer to approve than updates. I submitted 3 apps at the same time and the 2 updates were approved within a week and back to back, whereas the new app still hasn't been approved and essentially has very similar features. (The update is the “Lite” version and the new is the full version)

I agree with Daniel 100%. I have a game submitted that hit the 9 day late mark today and it is still in review. It is incredibly simplistic and less than 10MB so its not a taxing app to figure out or test other than the fact its in the line-up with the rest of the “In Review” apps. I can understand that.

However, your numbers wouldn't reflect the true delay if my simplistic app is 9 days late. How could it be possible that the apps within the last 7 days are only 2.56 days late and the last 14 days are 5.04 late and my app that has been sitting there 23 days is 9 days late UNLESS they are being approved out of order.

Your numbers are telling me they are selecting specific apps to approve over and above others and are not processing them on a first in first out basis.

Can anyone explain the numbers better to me here? I'm just not seeing it.

In the Aug 2009 count of submissions, it looks as though a figure is missing from the end of each of the totals. So Games should be 420 etc – then 14/day makes sense.

The numbers you mention match up with the count of submissions for this month (September).

I am considering development of a health and fitness related app and would like to know the search statistics ( i.e. how often is a specific keywords searched in the app store) and sales statistics for a specific apps (i.e. app X has ___ downloads/purchases). I would like a list of all the apps and a summary of what each app does. I can't find that information anywhere even at the App Store. Send it to my email or email me the web location for this information. Please don't say just try Apple or the App Store because I did. Its one thing for Apple to claim a total number of apps sold (actually Apples using the total number of apps downloaded free and paid, I believe). But the true numbers that tell you anything, are the total number of free apps compared to paid apps….

I have a question on the categorization of apps. Are those exclusive, that is, each app is assigned a single category? Or would I find an app that's a musical trivia game in several categories, for instance. I'm trying to design a research project around iPhone use, and this factor plays into it.

Hi, a little question about the number of submissions:

According to Steve Jobs at Live WWDC 2010, the number of submissed apps are about 15k per week (search for “15k” at page http://live.gdgt.com/2010/06/07/live-wwdc-2010-…).

Your stats tells me that there at most 25k app submissions per month (dec 2009), i.e. around 6k apps per week.

How can this be? May your stat be a bit wrong, or may Jobs have made a wrong statement? I'm asking because I'm going to write a few (hopefully correct) lines about these numbers.

Does anybody happen to know how many of the 44,870 current publishers actually made over $150 in order to get a check from Apple?

$1 Billion revenue paid by Apple could (in theory) represent $3000 / app. Considering most non-book apps cost at least $20,000 to develop (ie 2 people 2-4 weeks), most are already taking a heavy loss. If you consider that the apps in the top 10 were bringing in over $10-$100K/day, it leaves very little.

I'd be surprised if anybody got a check from Apple if they weren't in the top 500 at the end of the year.

I'd be very surprised if more than 0.1% of the developers actually made more money than they spent.

Thanks for the data. The harder question to get answered is the sales data for content within apps. Apple includes the sale of content (i.e. – books, game add-ons) in their ecosystem, but I haven’t been able to find any statistics on those sales. Got any ideas?

I know all apps are different, but are there any trends that show that downloads for a free app increase at a linear pace or that they spike initially and level off, etc. I’m creating my sales forecast for a new app I’m developing and I’m looking for some data (anecdotal if that’s all there is) to use when making my assumptions.

I’m a little bit confused…..I used explore function in App Store and I have counted about 120.000 apps….So there are two possibility:

1) I don’t know something about this count

that´s not the issue, it´s the fact that AppStore was able to sell that “stock” approximately 2000 times in 2010, that’s what I call “stock rotation”, to achieve US$ 1.7bn in revenue.

Current update date is 8/29.  Stats are updated once per week, on Mondays.
